| After a telephone conversation with a long-distance friend, where we discussed the redwood forests and how I had wanted to see them first-hand since I was a child, I became interested in the idea of trying to recreate some sense of the size and majesty of these infamous trees. I felt that doing so in a large, indoor space using crude low-budget materials could suggest a humble understanding, as well as the humor implecit in trying to handle the sheer scale of the subject. A ring created from the discarded ends of 2x4 planks, with a perimeter of approx. 15 feet is suspended 4.5 feet in the air. The circumference is that of a mature Coast Redwood tree. To figure the "girth" of this or any tree, a measurement around the trunk is taken at four and a half feet up, in general at chest level for a person of average height.
